Mother’s daughter

I am my mother’s daughter

She who loved me deeply and dearly

Who’s womb brought me life

And whose arms brought me comfort

I am my mother’s daughter

She whose resilience brought me hope

She who prayed nightly for my protection

Whose daily hustle gave me provision

I am my mother’s daughter

She who wanted for me a peaceful life

So she said ‘prepare to get married’

But I couldn’t understand

I am my mother’s daughter

Because I am that, I couldn’t understand

Why my first years were a preparation

To be a wife to my husband

I am my mother’s daughter

A descendant of heroines

An offspring of praying ancestors

Who wanted a better life for me

I am my mother’s daughter

Because I am that, I couldn’t understand

Why my first years were not a discovery

Of all that I could be by myself
